Green Travel Award

Climate-friendly travel pays off – with the Green Travel Award, LMU supports its Erasmus+ students who choose an environmentally conscious way of travelling to their exchange destination.

Green Travel Award

Sustainability plays a central role in the Erasmus+ programme: students who travel in an environmentally friendly way for their stay abroad can already receive additional funding (“Green Travel”). The LMU Green Travel Award builds on this priority and goes one step further by recognizing particularly committed and creative examples of climate-friendly mobility.

The competition is held annually and is open to both outgoing and incoming Erasmus+ students at LMU who begin their mobility in the winter semester. A requirement for participation is that the journey to and from the destination is made predominantly (at least 50%) using sustainable modes of transport such as trains, buses, or carpooling.

Participants submit a report about their journey, describing their planning, challenges, and impressions. A special focus is placed on the intercultural learning experiences during the journey itself: international train or bus travel often creates encounters and situations that contribute to the development of important soft skills—such as flexibility, communication skills, and intercultural competence. Participants’ reports show that these experiences can further enrich international mobility—experiences that often do not arise in the same way when traveling solely by plane.

In each round of the competition, three prizes are awarded to outgoing students and three to incoming students. The annual submission deadline is October 31.

With the Green Travel Award, LMU aims to make sustainable travel more visible, inspire other students, and contribute to making international mobility more climate-friendly.
